July 9 - Welcome to The Rock
Scored a bunkroom on the ferry so got to sleep, a good start. Set the watch half hour ahead, as Newfoundland is one of the few places in the world with an off hour time zone, then set out mostly north. Besides being far, newfoundland is huge - a triangle 300 miles a side, 16th biggest island in the world (sounds like 15 bikes trips to be planned - although greenland and baffin island are probably out). Good weather with some fog and stunning views. After a few tries, realized that other than rare sections the T-railway is not bikeable (need a mountain bike) so road the t-can. Relatively quiet, and a decent shoulder - ain't so bad. Some snow still on the mountains and stunted trees, many damaged by Fiona last year. Really unique geography/topography. Ran out of water, then figured drinking from rivers here is probably safe. Except for the bugs that attack you on the shore. The afternoon got hilly, headwind and hot as theres zero shade. Ate dinner - skipped cod tongues - at the only place on the road before staying at sunny hollow cabin near crabbes river. Weird clicking sound from back wheel, but only when I coast - Jason says to pretend its a fixie. Will check it out in corner Brook in 2 days. 70 miles.
