July 13 - Gros Morne
Woke up to pouring rain, so like a good viking, put on a rain coat....and then got in my car and drove north along the viking trail (route 430). Quickly climbed into the mountains of gros morne National park, no way to have done these steep climbs on a bike. Walked around Rocky Harbour and to lobster Cove head lighthouse, 2000' mountains dropping straight to the sea. Hiked to baker's brook falls, through forest/tundra-like wetlands, home to 5000+ moose (one VERY close encounter - and dont be fooled by moose enclosure: it keeps moose out to show off plants they eat), rain mostly stopped which brought out 5000 mosquitoes. Couple stops at rocky coves (very cool rock formations!) and a sandy beach along the shore where french fishing settlements used to be, cycled out to Western brook pond and a 2200' deep fjord, then dinner theatre production of The sinking of the SS Ethie in cow head. Doing the full Newfoundland thing. Stayed at very rustic mountain waters resort, just north of the park. Best day yet. Early start tomorrow for viking day. 4 miles, plus 10 walking.
