July 12 - Deer Lake

Joined at breakfast by a big tour group at my hotel, looks like they're having a good time. Maybe when we're all too old to bike, this'll be me and my buddies? Anyway nice to have real breakfast and lots of coffee before setting off. More services today, and sun came out despite forecast. After false start halfway up the hill, realized I could ride along the water (bay, then river, then lake) and pickup the road further north. Good riding up humber valley on t-can/various side roads/railway and alongside Deer Lake (misnamed by Europeans after seeing caribou), which is 20 miles long, and doesn't even register on a list of big lakes Newfoundland. Some nicer homes along the lake, but the town  of Deer Lake is another unimpressive Newfoundland community, with mostly chain fast food restaurants.  Checked out the insectarium for my entomologist daughter.  Shorter day as I picked up rental car for next portion of the trip, to Gros Morne and Viking site. And hopefully see some icebergs. 40 miles.
